Breaking Barriers: Absolom and Ngoni’s Triumph at AfriKera Arts Trust
Graduation is a moment of celebration and reflection, and for Absolom Chikwezvero and Alvin Ngoni Kamudyariwa, their recent graduation from the AfriKera Professional Dance Training Class of 2021 (APDT21) was nothing short of exceptional. These two remarkable APDT21 students not only successfully completed their ballet RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) exams, but they achieved this feat with exceptional distinctions. Their journey is a testament to their unwavering dedication and resilience.
The Road Less Traveled
In the world of ballet, a RAD qualification is a prestigious honor. For Absolom Chikwezvero, the decision to undertake the RAD exam was driven by a deep desire to establish a strong foundation as a professional dancer. “I knew I needed a solid base to build my career, and this exam was crucial to that foundation,” Absolom reflects. Yet, the path was anything but easy. Balancing preparation for two exams alongside final assessments at AfriKera was a grueling process. The preparation period was characterized by isolation and sacrifice. “We had to focus solely on what benefited us, which meant walking long distances after intense days at Afrikera and giving our all during evening classes,” he shares.
Despite these challenges, the support from Miss Faye Jackson and Soukaina Marie-Laure Edom, their ballet mistress and Institution founder and director respectively, proved invaluable. “Their support was unwavering, and they were the pillars that held us up throughout this demanding process,” said Absolom.
A Test of Spirit
Ngoni Kamudyariwa’s inspiration to pursue the ballet RAD exams came from a desire to stand out and make history at AfriKera. “I wanted to be different and break records, and Miss Faye always inspired me to envision myself on a grander stage,” he explains. The preparation involved not only physical training but also personal sacrifices, including late-night rehearsals and a disciplined approach to self-presentation.
When it came to the exam itself, Ngoni found an unexpected element of fun. “We were treated with a level of professionalism that felt like we were in Europe. The examiner was understanding, and the whole experience was positive,” he recalls with a smile.
The Joy of Achievement
The moment of truth arrived with the exam results. For Absolom, receiving news of his distinctions was a profound experience. “I wished Miss Faye was there so I could give her a big hug,” he says. The satisfaction of passing with distinction in both Intermediate and Advanced levels was a testament to his hard work and the support from AfriKera.
Ngoni’s reaction was equally emotional. Initially in disbelief, he took some time to process the news. “I felt on top of the world. The only thing on my mind before the exam was ballet, and seeing the results made me feel that all the hard work had truly paid off,” he describes.
Looking Ahead
For both Absolom and Ngoni, these achievements are more than just personal milestones; they are stepping stones in their professional journeys. Absolom sees ballet as the foundation for his future in contemporary dance. “Having a solid ballet background opens doors internationally and strengthens my applications to other companies,” he explains. Ngoni echoes this sentiment, recognizing that his ballet training sets him apart on the international stage. “With the technique and experience I’ve gained, I feel five steps ahead in my career,” he notes.
Lessons Learned
The journey has imparted significant life lessons. Absolom emphasizes the importance of pursuing what scares you. “If it scares you or makes you want to quit, then it’s definitely worth it. Going after what you want can change your life for the better,” he advises. Ngoni’s takeaway is equally profound. “Nothing is impossible until you try. Changing your mindset can transform your life, and success comes from loving what you do,” he concludes.
A Tribute to Dedication
Their teacher, Miss Faye Jackson, sums up their achievement with admiration. “Absolom and Ngoni were model students, demonstrating exceptional commitment and passion. They achieved distinctions with only half the recommended training hours, proving that dreams come true with hard work and dedication. I wish them a long and successful career,” she states proudly.
Absolom Chikwezvero and Alvin Ngoni Kamudyariwa’s success is not just a personal triumph but a source of inspiration for many. Their story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with dedication, resilience, and the unwavering support of those who believe in you. As they move forward in their careers, the skills and lessons they’ve gained will undoubtedly propel them to even greater heights.
